data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"\u039a\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03cc\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2\">Keratoconus<\/a> is an eye condition in which the normal structure of the cornea progressively thins, forming a cone-shaped cornea. This alters the quality of vision and gradually reduces visual acuity. The condition usually affects both eyes.<\/p><p>This disorder most often appears in the mid-second decade of life. Its initial onset may go unnoticed by the patient or the ophthalmologist. The first sign is the continual, frequent change in the patient\u2019s eyeglass prescription, primarily due to increasing astigmatism. In advanced stages, vision can be significantly reduced.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1862\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Causes<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1862\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1862\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>Keratoconus is a rare corneal disorder. It occurs in approximately 1 in 2,000 people, with no geographic predilection. The exact causes of keratoconus remain unknown. However, research indicates that a family history is the most significant risk factor (heredity).<\/p><p>Other studies suggest a correlation between the progression of the disease and conditions that cause itching (allergies or atopic disorders), particularly during childhood.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1863\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Symptoms<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1863\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1863\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><h3 style=\"font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 32px; color: #5b5b5b; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 22px; clear: both; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;\">The main symptoms of the disease are:<\/h3><div><span style=\"color: #252829; margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><div><p>\u00a0<\/p><div><ul><li>Photophobia (light sensitivity)<\/li><li>Metamorphopsia (distorted vision)<\/li><li>Blurred vision that cannot be corrected with glasses<\/li><li>Reduced visual acuity<\/li><li>Difficulty driving at night<\/li><li>Intolerance to soft contact lenses<\/li><\/ul><\/div><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1864\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Diagnosis<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1864\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1864\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>Diagnosis is made by the clinical ophthalmologist through corneal topography examination. In this test, a computer is used to analyze the structure of the cornea and generate a map of its anterior and posterior surfaces.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1865\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Treatment<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1865\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1865\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>The treatment of keratoconus has two main objectives:<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>Stabilization of progression<br \/><ul style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 25px;\"><li>Corneal cross-linking (CXL): Using vitamin B12 in combination with a source of ultraviolet light, the collagen fibers of the cornea are cross-linked, resulting in corneal strengthening and halting the progression of the disease in most cases. This is a quick procedure that does not require hospital admission and lasts about 40 minutes.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul style=\"margin: 16px 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 25px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li>Improvement of vision<br \/><ul style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 25px;\"><li>Contact lenses (rigid lenses): Contact lenses correct a significant part of the refractive error by reshaping the cornea. However, many patients experience intolerance to these lenses, requiring alternative solutions.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 25px; list-style-type: circle; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li><em> Combination of cross-linking and PRK <a href=\"https:\/\/eye-center.gr\/glaykoma-mia-nea-therapeia-slt-laser\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"\u0393\u03bb\u03b1\u03cd\u03ba\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\">laser<\/a> (corneal <a href=\"https:\/\/eye-center.gr\/glaykoma-mia-nea-therapeia-slt-laser\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"\u0393\u03bb\u03b1\u03cd\u03ba\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\">laser<\/a>): <\/em>Not suitable for all patients. This approach can improve <a href=\"https:\/\/eye-center.gr\/myopia\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"\u039c\u03c5\u03c9\u03c0\u03af\u03b1\">myopia<\/a> and astigmatism significantly while stabilizing the keratoconic cornea through corneal collagen cross-linking.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 25px; list-style-type: circle; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li>Penetrating keratoplasty or full-thickness corneal transplantation: When the cornea has become excessively thin and contact lenses or cross-linking are not viable, or when there is a high risk of perforation, this procedure is indicated.
