When these vessels are obstructed, a cascade of events occurs that can impair retinal function in the affected area.<\/p><p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">Risk Factors<\/p><p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">As with many vascular conditions, risk factors for retinal vein occlusion include: High blood pressure, advanced age, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, elevated intraocular pressure, and smoking.<\/p><p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">Studies have also shown that contraceptive medications can increase the risk of retinal vein occlusion, along with other predisposing conditions such as chronic kidney failure, dehydration, and hyperviscosity syndromes.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1552\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Cause<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1552\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1552\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><ul><li><p lang=\"en-US\">The primary mechanism of retinal vein occlusion is pressure exerted by the wall of a neighboring artery on the adjacent vein at the point where they cross. Addressing any associated systemic diseases\u2014such as <b>diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or metabolic syndrome<\/b>\u2014is crucial.<\/p><p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">Intravitreal Anti-VEGF Injections<br \/>These medications treat macular edema caused by the occlusion. The number of injections varies by patient, as each case is unique.<\/p><p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">Intravitreal Steroid Implants<br \/>Steroid implants are highly effective for managing macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion. Potential drawbacks include increased intraocular pressure in some patients and a risk of cataract formation.<\/p><p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eye-center.gr\/glaykoma-mia-nea-therapeia-slt-laser\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"\u0393\u03bb\u03b1\u03cd\u03ba\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\">Laser<\/a> Therapy<br \/>In cases of neovascularization (identified via fluorescein angiography), retinal photocoagulation <a href=\"https:\/\/eye-center.gr\/glaykoma-mia-nea-therapeia-slt-laser\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"\u0393\u03bb\u03b1\u03cd\u03ba\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\">laser<\/a> is the treatment of choice.
