Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration: The Early Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Sight is perhaps the most precious of our senses. However, many serious eye diseases develop silently, causing irreversible damage before the patient even realizes the problem. One of the most characteristic and dangerous of these diseases is Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

In our modern ophthalmology clinic in Kalamata, we often encounter patients over 50 who notice “small” changes in their vision, which they often and incorrectly attribute simply to fatigue or presbyopia.

But what is the macula, what are the warning signs of the disease, and why an immediate visit to the ophthalmologist is crucial?

What is the Macula?

The often overlooked maculata is a very small but extremely important area in the center of the retina (at the back of the eye). It is responsible for our sharp, central vision. Thanks to the macula, we can read, recognize faces, drive, and see in detail.

When the macula begins to deteriorate – usually due to age, heredity, or lifestyle (e.g. smoking) – central vision becomes blurred, even though peripheral vision remains intact.

The 4 Early Signs to Look Out For

Early detection is our most powerful weapon against the progression of the disease. Never ignore the following symptoms:

  1. Distortion of Straight Lines (Metamorphopsia)

This is the most classic and alarming symptom. Straight lines, such as a door frame, bathroom tiles, or lines on a notebook page, appear wavy, crooked, or broken.

  1. Blurred or Dark Spots in the Center of Vision

You may notice a permanent “gray” or blurry spot in the very center of your field of vision. This “blind spot” grows larger as the condition goes untreated, making reading and recognizing faces gradually impossible.

  1. Difficulty Adjusting to Darkness or Need for Bright Light

If you notice that you need increasingly bright light to read, or that your eyes take longer to adjust when you go from a bright room to a dark one, your macula may be starting to decline.

  1. Colour Perception Changes

Colors may start to appear more “faded”, “dull” or less bright than they used to.

Wet or Dry Form: Why Time Matters

Macular Degeneration is basically divided into two categories:

  1. Dry form (85-90% of cases): It progresses slowly. It can often be slowed down with specific nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes (smoking cessation, protection from UV radiation).
  2. Wet form (10-15% of cases): Pathological vessels develop under the macula that leak fluid or blood. It is an emergency and causes rapid, severe vision loss.

*Caution:* The “dry” form can turn into “wet” at any time. Immediate intervention with specialized intravitreal injections (anti-VEGF) in liquid form can halt the course of the disease.
