Laser Eye Surgery: Everything You Need to Know!

Are you tired of your glasses for myopia or hyperopia? Don’t have the time or money for contact lens solution every month?

Glasses are undoubtedly an interesting accessory that often functions as a style choice or form of expression. Primarily, however, they are an essential tool for people suffering from myopia.

Similarly, contact lenses are an advanced solution for vision problems — yet a tool that does not suit everyone.

A permanent answer to this refractive abnormality of our eyes, then, is laser surgery.

What is refractive eye laser surgery and what does it do:

It is a definitive treatment providing rapid recovery, which sculpts the cornea and allows light to focus precisely on the retina. It is a procedure that corrects myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, but it is not suitable for individuals with other ophthalmological diseases or systemic conditions (e.g., keratoconus). It is a very safe operation, offering highly precise correction of each problem, and requires no significant interference with the eye tissues. All this, of course, is the result of a crucial combination: modern technological advancements and the physician’s many years of experience.

Requirements for suitable candidates:

  • Individuals over 19 years old
  • Stable myopia or astigmatism
  • No autoimmune diseases or connective tissue disorders without treatment
  • For women, no pregnancy or breastfeeding

Additional instructions:

As the day of the procedure approaches, the eyes should be “clean,” without irritation, and it is recommended to avoid makeup, perfumes, creams, etc.

The procedure begins after the application of anesthetic drops, minimizing pain and leaving only a slight feeling of discomfort.

Laser Methods:

LASIK

This method involves the use of two cutting-edge technologies: the femtosecond laser, which creates a flap on the surface of the cornea, and the excimer laser, which sculpts the stromal layer. It has excellent results for conditions such as myopic astigmatism and is the method of choice for correcting hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism. Its main advantage is that it minimizes postoperative discomfort and recovery time.

PRK

This method is applied in cases of lower degrees of myopia or myopic astigmatism. It is also recommended when the cornea is too thin for LASIK.

Recovery

Vision recovery is immediate, and what may cause hesitation among candidates about undergoing the procedure is the fear of “what comes after.” “What comes after,” however, is actually just a slight discomfort — similar to the feeling of “having a speck of dust in your eye.”

So ask yourself: is a brief, minor discomfort enough to keep you away from a life with clear vision?
