Pediatric Ophthalmology

Service

Ophthalmologic evaluation of children is essential and requires specialized knowledge and approach. Vision is one of the most important human senses, developing from the earliest years of life. Since the eyes must learn to work in coordination with the brain, this process is complex. Visual maturation occurs primarily during the first 8–9 years of life.

This underscores the importance of early ophthalmologic screening in childhood. Any problems that arise during this period can negatively affect visual development and potentially lead to reduced visual acuity throughout life.

Pediatric ophthalmology is a specialized branch of ophthalmology focused on examining the visual system of children, diagnosing problems, and providing appropriate treatment. A pediatric ophthalmologist can monitor, examine, and perform ophthalmic surgery for a wide range of pediatric eye conditions, from birth through adolescence.

It is crucial that the first ophthalmologic examination is conducted by a pediatric ophthalmologist by the age of three. This allows for early detection and treatment of conditions that may be developing, which is especially important as children rarely report poor vision or eye discomfort. Examinations of newborns are usually performed by means of indirect ophthalmoscopy to detect conditions such as congenital cataract or congenital glaucoma.

The second examination ought to take place between the second and third year of life by conducting refractive assessment to detect myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism

If no other apparent issues are present (e.g., strabismus), the next examination should be conducted at the age of four, prior to going to school. This visit includes testing visual acuity, color perception, and screening for strabismus.
